Corrine Brown Blames Howard Dean

JACKSONVILLE, FL — Democratic Congresswoman Corrine Brown places the blame for the delegate flap squarely on DNC Chairman Howard Dean.

“I think Howard Dean should fix the problem or resign,” Brown exclaims during an interview at First Coast News studios.

Brown insists that Florida’s delegates be seated at the convention according to the results of the January primary.

“And after what happened in 2000 in Florida, elections is a raw nerve for people in Florida. And you should not mess with us! And you should not mistreat us in Florida,” she says.

However, after nearly two months of bickering, bargaining and begging the Florida Democrats and the national party are still at an impasse.

And unless something changes, Florida’s delegates will not be seated at the Denver convention which begins August 27th. The state’s Super Delegates, of which Brown is one, will have no say, either.

“Let me tell you something. If he (Dean) does not work this out, not only do I show up, I show up with a million Floridians. We will circle the convention. No one will go in until we resolve this issue. I’m not playing with him. He needs to get it straight before then. I’m not playing.”

Differences in Eating Habits Between Men and Woman

Study finds men prefer meat and poultry, women prefer fruits and vegetables

When it comes to what we eat, men and women really are different according to scientific research presented today (March 19) at the 2008 International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Atlanta, Georgia. In general, men are more likely to report eating meat and poultry items and women are more likely to report eating fruits and vegetables.

The findings come from the most recent population survey of the Foodborne Disease Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet). From May 2006 to April 2007 over 14,000 American adults participated in an extensive survey outlining their eating habits, including high risk foods for foodborne illness.

“There was such a variety of data we thought it would be interesting to see whether there were any gender differences. To our knowledge, there have been studies in the literature on gender differences in eating habits, but nothing this extensive,” says Beletshachew Shiferaw, a lead researcher on the study.

Shiferaw and her colleagues found that men were significantly more likely to eat meat and poultry products especially duck, veal, and ham. They were also more likely to eat certain shellfish such as shrimp and oysters.

Women, on the other hand were more likely to eat vegetables, especially carrots and tomatoes. As for fruits, they were more likely to eat strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and apples. Women also preferred dry foods, such as almonds and walnuts, and were more likely to consume eggs and yogurt when compared with men.

There were some exceptions to the general trend. Men were significantly more likely to consume asparagus and brussels sprouts than women while women were more likely to consume fresh hamburgers (as opposed to frozen, which the men preferred).

The researchers also looked at reported behavior in regards to consumption of 6 risky foods: undercooked hamburger, runny or undercooked eggs, raw oysters, unpasteurized milk, cheese made from unpasteurized milk and alfalfa sprouts. Men were significantly more likely to eat undercooked hamburger and runny eggs while women were more likely to eat alfalfa sprouts.

This information is important to public health officials because better understanding of gender differences in eating habits can help them create more targeted strategies for prevention.

“The reason we looked at consumption and risky behaviors was to see if there was a statistically significant difference between men and women and if there is this information could be used by health educators to target interventions,” says Shiferaw.

Self-reporting is all well and good, but people have been known to lie.  Shocking, I know, but….if I were keeping a careful log for somebody about what I actually ate, I wouldn’t put what I actually ate but what I thought I should be eating.

That said, in my household, I fix veggies.  SwampMan does not, but he will eat them.  He has a tendency to eat more bread than I do.  I do eat more fruits and salad than he does.

I haven’t really noticed a huge difference between men’s and women’s eating habits when eating out.  What I notice is a difference in eating patterns between those that are dieting and those that are not.

Here Comes SwampWoman Hoppin’ Down the Bunny Trail

Well, I had started buying the assorted Easter paraphernalia–baskets, Easter grass, chocolate, toys–when I was informed that my lil’ grandchildren faced a candy-less Easter because the National Guard check had yet to arrive.  MeeMaw to the rescue!  I delivered the items that I had on hand.

Today, after a hurried trip to the feed store to buy feed before they closed, I realized that I had not replenished my Easter supplies–MeeMaw had best not be out of goodies for the grandkids on Easter!  I had run up to the feed store after performing some outdoor chores–weed chopping, fence mending, chicken house shoveling–and was dressed accordingly, all sweaty, dirty, and with lank, damp hair.  All in all, a horrible/scary sight, no doubt.

I have in the past noticed that when I’m all clean and perfumed and well dressed that I don’t ever see anybody I know, but when I smell like dirt and chicken house and sheep barn with horse boogers on my shirt and sheep pee on my shoes, I run into everybody I know.  That held true today, unfortunately.  I ran into several co-workers that don’t even LIVE in my town but were frantically searching for Easter supplies.  I ran into friends I hadn’t seen for ages and unfortunately, concentrating on being invisible didn’t render me as such.  They all had on clean clothes.   Their nails were freshly manicured and hair was freshly styled.   The men, too, were all nice and clean and didn’t look like they’d spent the afternoon scrubbing down the gas grill.

I eventually wound up with my Easter stuff and slunk out of the store, only to be hailed by two more friends.

Now to get started on the cooking and the cleaning of the inside of the house before tomorrow.

Can-Am Spyder

I saw my first Can-Am Spyder a couple of weeks ago, and told ol’ SwampMan that was my next vehicle.  He snorted, and pointed out that I do not like the cold, or getting wet, or having people run over me, plus I’d have to get rid of the livestock in order to afford the payment (which would be about what I’m putting out on livestock and vet fees).

I dunno.  I think that maybe the reduction in gas usage would make the payment since I need to find another job in town anyway.

And remember to look for a job where helmet hair isn’t an issue.

Sigh.  Guess I’ll just stick to an 4-wheeled ATV and a truck.
