Message From the States to the Federal Government

AZ House votes to set our own course on light bulbs

PHOENIX – The Arizona House has approved a bill that supporters hope will use light bulbs to set the stage for a possible court fight over states’ rights.

The bill approved 33-27 on Wednesday targets federal efficiency standards that require new incandescent light bulbs to use less energy than existing models.

The bill would state that an incandescent light bulb manufactured in Arizona and not exported to any other state is exempt from federal laws and regulations governing interstate commerce.

Supporters argue that the federal government is treading on the state’s authority to regulate intrastate commerce and that passage of the state legislation could encourage manufacturers to locate in Arizona.
