Catching Ducks

Son’s girlfriend came over. She wanted a couple ducklings that were small but not newly hatched. She brought over some friends that wanted ducklings, too. They decided to take away a gray duck’s ducklings.

I wanted to leave her with at least SOME ducklings but, honestly, another duck just hatched out a dozen, and there are four more ducks “setting” eggs. They took all nine of her babies. Old gray momma is outside frantically running around and calling for them. I expect that she will join her daughter, who has the twelve newly hatched, and help rear them. How do I know that the new Momma is her daughter? Because Old Momma didn’t run her ass off into the next county when they joined up feeding.

Soon it will be too cold at night for any new ducklings to survive. Then I’ll be out there picking up little half frozen ducklings, or completely frozen little ducklings, poor little things. I was only able to save 6 out of about 30 last winter. So many were dead before I found them.

Gray momma is a good momma. She never loses any of her ducklings. Several of the others have lost all of theirs.

If you grow any andouille to go with those ducks, let me know.

I want to put 20 or 30 in the freezer; however, SwampMan doesn’t want to have anything to do with duck–roasted, stewed, confit, or otherwise.
