Time Change Has Kicked My Butt (Again)

Sorry about the spectacular lack of posts lately. It has been getting more and more difficult for me to keep up with the livestock before it gets commpletely dark, cook semi-nutritious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner because we’re too damn fat, and work all day. Heh. You know which activity I’d like to ditch, but we can barely get by with the addition of my small salary. In fact, I’m still looking for a part-time job to augment that salary. Not enough hours in the day!

I’ve been sitting in with special education kids that are being mainstreamed in some classes this week, and the ones that I have been with are woefully behind their same age peers, even in the third and fourth grade science classes. The science classes are exploring igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, plate tectonics, fault lines, etc. The special education kids are participating by verbally answering the questions in the text that is read to them, and their answers are written for them.

Sometimes I forget, in the celebration of some milestone that the children have achieved, how truly far behind their peers they are. And the gap continues to widen.

It’s become not just acceptable but a requirement to put slower learners in with the regular classes, but they will tend to slow the others, not learn quicker. They are incapable of ‘catching up.’

Mainstreaming…doesn’t advance those with difficulties, it hinders those who are thriving.

My grandmother died in 2000 at 98 – she taught school for over 65 years, finally retiring at age 85. It’s one of the nuggets of wisdom she passed on to me.

Uh, when exactly would you work ANOTHER job? You don’t get enough sleep as it is!
