I Found the Chicken Livers

I went into the kitchen to cook breakfast this morning, and the smell emanating was *nasty*. Ewwwwww. What could it be? I’d convinced myself that Zoe had most likely dumped the chicken livers in the trash can, like most of the silverware, and they had gone off with the trash. Apparently NOT. Eeesh.

The scent seemed strongest around the sink. I sniffed the cabinets under the built-in range top again. Nope, nothing here. Next the corner cabinet with the cast iron pots and pans. Nope. The cabinet under the sink was tied shut because of various cleaning supplies, so nothing here. Then I opened another corner cabinet which held baking pans and little used appliances, and the smell grabbed me by my nose and reached deep into the smell receptors in my brain and whacked ’em with a sledgehammer. I think we found the place!

Back in the very back of the cabinet, underneath a cake pan, was the offending package. It was upside down, so the blood had drained out and pooled underneath the baking sheets, into a cutting board, and underneath various appliances. All this bacterial breeding-ground goodness was quite invisible to a cursory glance inside the cabinet looking for a big yellow container of chicken livers right out there in the open. I could not even get that far into the cabinet without opening it all the way, removing pans, and crawling into it.

Note to self: Next time chicken livers disappear, do not assume anything.

So, everything is out of the cabinet which is bleached. Now the house reeks of straight bleach, nasty decomposing blood and chicken livers.

Don’t get chicken livers, but rotten spuds are awful. How can something so innocuous stink so bad when it goes off?

And Russians make vodka from spuds!
